Our Stories
Meet Thabo
Thabo became homeless in his late 20s or early 30s after a misunderstanding with his father, which started soon after his father remarried. What began as a family issue eventually turned into years of silence and separation. Thabo left home and did not contact his family for almost 15 years during which they believed he had passed away.
Before becoming homeless, Thabo had worked in restaurants and hotels, living a normal and productive life. But like many people who find themselves in difficult situations, one unresolved family conflict changed everything.
When I met Thabo at the Sea Point Promenade, he had lost hope but after spending time together and talking, his spirit began to come alive again. With some effort and communication, I managed to reconnect him with his family, and we were able to send him home.
Thabo’s story is one that deeply touches me. It reminds me why we do what we do because sometimes all it takes is one act of kindness to restore hope and rebuild lives.
Meet Emily Smith
I first met Emily, she was a 19-year-old young woman living on the streets. She was limping, wearing an oversized jacket, and looked cold and vulnerable. Despite her situation, I quickly realized that Emily was one of the most intelligent young women I had ever met, she was simply trapped in difficult circumstances caused by drug abuse and emotional dependence.
What made her situation even more challenging was her attachment to her 40-year-old boyfriend. Emily often said he was the only person who had ever truly loved her, which made it hard for her to leave the streets, even when help was offered.
Emily had lost both her parents and spoke about her brother in one of the interview videos we recorded.
I would say she is a bright and thoughtful young woman who simply needed guidance, support, and a chance to rebuild her life.
Fresh Cuts, Fresh Start
When SameMindSafeSpace was founded, the journey started from a very personal place. I, Saymore Manyaira, the CEO and founder, once took a moment to step into the shoes of the homeless. I imagined how difficult it is for them to access the simple things many people take for granted a clean haircut, a warm meal, a shower, or even the feeling of being welcomed in a public space.
Many homeless individuals are turned away from salons, restaurants, and grocery stores simply because of their appearance or their circumstances. That reality touched my heart deeply.
The inspiration behind our mission became even stronger when I met a young homeless man living with mild mental challenges. His story reminded me that behind every person on the street, there is a human being with a story, a struggle, and a hope for a better tomorrow.
At SameMindSafeSpace, we chose to be different.
We chose creativity over judgment.
We chose compassion over silence.
We chose action over excuses.
That is why we offer free haircuts, free meals, and soon, free access to showers and shelter. Our goal is not just to restore dignity but to create real opportunities for transformation.
And we cannot do it alone.
With your support, we can reach more people, touch more lives, and build a future where no one is left behind.
